It's no secret that Western Wyoming is an opponent the Sheridan Lady Generals have struggled to beat. The Western Mustangs defeated Sheridan in the Region IX quarterfinal game last year ending Sheridan's cinderella season. This year has been a different story. The Gens won handedly the first time the two teams met this season scoring three goals, holding a shut-out and dominating the game at both ends. The Sheridan squad traveled to Rock Springs this past weekend to play the second of two conference matches against Western and this time the Mustangs did not go down as gently.
The Lady Gens had a strong start, maintaining possession and generating multiple scoring opportunities. Just 15 minutes into the half Sophomore captain Sidney Burrell found the back of the net from a direct kick off the foot of fellow sophomore Sarah Jones. Despite continued offensive pressure Sheridan was unable to score again and went into the halftime unsatisfied with a lone goal lead.
Less than ten minutes into the second half a penalty against Sheridan lead to Western Wyoming's Emma Barnes's equalizer goal off a direct kick. The momentum turned in favor of the Mustangs and for the next thirty minutes Sheridan battled defensively and struggled to control possession. Sheridan's offense sprang to life towards the end of the half when Fortune Kede sent a shot off the right post. With just 3 minutes left before overtime Sheridan's Chelsea Thornburgh was fouled in the box giving the Gen's an opportune penalty kick. Sarah Jones shot to the left side of Western Wyoming goalkeeper Lindsey Lemmons giving Sheridan the lead and ultimately the road win against a frustrated Mustang squad.
